ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
From research idea to published work
The HERS-EA PhD Research Support and Scholarly Writing Bootcamp is an annual initiative for women scholars in East Africa at different stages of the doctoral journey. It creates space to work on a research concept, make progress on a dissertation or prepare findings for publication and wider audiences. Scholars from the sciences, humanities and interdisciplinary fields work directly on their own research through practical sessions, writing clinics, individual work and peer learning.

01 / Emerging researchers
Proposal Development and Research Concept Refinement
For aspiring PhD candidates shaping a research idea or proposal. Support covers the research problem, questions, literature review, methodology, academic writing and research ethics.
02 / Continuing PhD students
Data Analysis and Dissertation Progression
For PhD students who have completed data collection. Work on data management, quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods analysis, interpretation of findings and the next steps in the dissertation.
03 / Advanced PhD students
Scholarly Writing, Publication and Research Dissemination
For scholars developing findings, thesis chapters or manuscripts into publishable work. Explore scholarly writing, journal selection, peer review, conference presentations and research dissemination.
HOW IT WORKS
Time to write. Support to move forward.
Each participant joins the track suited to her current work. The Bootcamp combines guided sessions with dedicated time to apply what she learns, discuss challenges and receive feedback from peers and facilitators.
Designed for progress
Participants bring their own research to the Bootcamp and leave with stronger skills and clearer next steps for advancing it. The programme aims to build research capacity and women’s scholarly leadership across East Africa.
FIRST EDITION
The inaugural Bootcamp in 2026
HERS-EA will launch the annual programme in November 2026, hosted by Uganda Martyrs University. The first edition brings together selected women scholars across the three research tracks for focused work, practical support and peer learning
Organised by HERS-EA in partnership with the Andrew Carnegie Foundation and Uganda Martyrs University.
